Notes

  • S5778 - Christmas Bird Counts reported a maximum of 255,000 birds in Canada and the U.S. As they cover only a portion of the range, the overall population is likely much larger. USFWS counts for 2003 yielded 362,383 mergansers. Assuming 0% Red-breasted, 15% Hooded and 85% Common, we obtain an estimate of 308,025 Common Merganser. The estimate for 2002 was 398,066. Assuming 25% of unpaired males and subadults, we obtain estimates of 385,031 for 2003 and 497,582 for 2002.
