Notes

  • S5613 - 4,297 off Kola Peninsula in April 2003 (389). 2,250 in S Baltic in 2003 (749). 2,000-4,000 winter off Norway (676).
  • T3729 - This population declined at a rate of 15% per year between 1996 and 2003 (749).
  • S8137 - BirdLife estimate currently online is 23k-36k, but recent survey by Aarvak et al. (2012) gives more precise estimate that is within this range.
  • S8560 - Coordinated aerial count of wintering Steller’s Eider was conducted in Norway and Russia in 2009.
  • T6553 - Numbers found during two surveys in 1994 and 2009 (Nygard et al. 1995, Aarvak et al. 2012) were similar.
  • S9061 - Coordinated aerial count of wintering Steller’s Eider was conducted in Norway and Russia in 2009.
  • T6961 - Numbers found during two surveys in 1994 and 2009 (Nygard et al. 1995, Aarvak et al. 2012) were similar. Baltic subpopulation continues decreasing (BirdLife International 2015, HELCOM, 2017). However, JWGBIRD (Markones in litt) expressed doubts concerning the representativity of land-based counts which concerns in case of this species only the smaller Baltic subpopulation.
