Recent genetic studies (Rhymer et al. 2001, Glenn et al. 2002, Peterson et al. 2003) have concluded that rowani is indistinguishable from tabida and thus, that there are only 2 subspecies in the Mid-Continent Population of Sandhill Cranes: canadensis and tabida (Hands, H. in litt. July 2005.).
